“Small” Contributions Leading to Big Impacts

Working in the healthcare industry, I have learned increasingly about Social Determinants of Healthcare—income, education, employment, food security, affordable housing—as I continue to grow in my career. With problems this large and systemic, it is easy to give into thinking like, “What can I do about such a big problem? I’m just one person.” I wanted to do something, but I didn’t know where to start. Then, I heard about Project HOME and decided to start there.

I started my journey with Project HOME doing what I originally believed were small things. I donated spare clothes to be sold at the HOMEspun Boutique, I volunteered by serving coffee at the Hub of Hope, and I made meaningful financial donations. In my mind, these were all just tiny drops in a bucket that would never be filled. When I joined the Rising Leaders Committee in November of 2022, I realized how others like me were also putting drops in that bucket, and that bucket was continuously being filled.

As a Rising Leader, I have been fortunate to collaborate with Project HOME employees, community partners, volunteers, and peers who also want to help. Over these past two years, I realized that everyone has a part to play, both big and small, in contributing to the vision  that None of Us Are Home Until All of Us Are Home.

The power of community, or the “Power of We,” as Project HOME believes in, means that every donation, every hour spent volunteering, every connection and sharing of resources, and every chance to advocate for the organization, has an amplified effect and impact.  Because of this, what may independently feel like a “small act,” comes together with others to make radical change and gives tools to help people empower themselves, through access to permanent affordable housing, opportunities for employment and professional growth access to medical care, and continuing education for students of all ages.

If you’re like me and looking to do something that can make an impact, do not hesitate to take your first step. Even if what you think you can provide is “small,” you’re contributing to something much larger, and your impact will have a ripple effect to those who can benefit the most.
