“Step Up to the Plate” – a collaborative effort of Broad Street Ministry, Project HOME, and Prevention Point Philadelphia — officially launched today. A central part of the City’s efforts to address hunger during the COVID-19 pandemic, the organizations worked closely with the Office of Homeless Services to secure two large outdoor sites, allowing meal services to continue while maintaining appropriate social distancing guidelines. These sites are the North Apron of City Hall (located near Project Home‘s Hub of Hope outdoor medical clinic), and an outdoor lot at the intersection of East Clearfield and Ruth Streets in Kensington, near Prevention Point Philadelphia.

Grab-and-go meals will be distributed Monday through Friday from 11:30 AM to 1 PM at the City Hall apron and from 1 PM to 3 PM in Kensington at E. Clearfield and Ruth Streets.

At both sites, COVID-19-related health care services and resources will be available for those experiencing homelessness. In Center City, Project HOME’s Hub of Hope staff will provide services. In Kensington, services will be provided by Prevention Point Philadelphia.

With so much going on related to the COVID-19 crisis impacting people who are homeless or low-income, here are some policy and action resources we are following. 

Dental services will now only be provided for urgent dental needs or emergencies, based on guidelines set by the PA Department of Health and American Dental Association. New or established patients with urgent needs should call the SKWC at 215-320-6187 for phone triage by a dentist. Dental services at the Hub of Hope will remain closed until further notice.

The Hub of Hope will be OPEN today and Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM and will continue operating in accordance with CDC guidelines. Weekend hours, laundry, and case management will be postponed until further notice.

Many of our folks are at extreme risk and vulnerable right now, and we hope that now, as has been the case for over 30 years, our community will step up to help. Starting today, we are collaborating with Roonga to create the Project HOME GroceryLifeLine.  

Will you please help keep our most vulnerable residents safe and healthy by signing up to become a GroceryLifeLine? It only takes four simple steps:
 

Four Simple Steps

Step 1: Select a resident’s profile. You will receive a confirmation email with all key details;  

Step 2: Purchase (or order for delivery) items from the resident’s personalized grocery list; 

Step 3: If purchasing and delivering, please clearly label all bags with the resident’s first name and last initial. We ask that you wipe down all items for safety precautions; and,  

Step 4: Deliver (or direct delivery of) the groceries to the Project HOME resident within 48 hours of your sign up, between 10 AM and 4 PM. Please do not enter the building, but merely ring the front bell and wait for someone to come to the door. You, or the delivery person, can then leave the groceries there and a community member will deliver the groceries to the resident’s apartment.

We anticipate re-opening on Thursday, March 26, with an updated plan of services to best meet the needs of individuals experiencing homelessness in Philadelphia during this crisis.

Project HOME Healthcare Services has been closely monitoring the Coronavirus outbreak. We are actively working to support public health best practices and efforts to contain the spread of this disease. We also take our responsibility as a primary care practice very seriously. We are providing this set of guidelines about how we are changing the way we provide services based on current conditions of this outbreak. These guidelines are subject to change as public health recommendations and governmental policies change.

Medical Services

• Medical services at Stephen Klein Wellness Center (SKWC) are currently open and operating on normal business hours. Tuesday evening hours have been curtailed.
• We are asking patients to call 215-320-6187 prior to coming to the SKWC in order to figure out how to best meet their needs and ensure their safety. We are using telephone encounters with medical providers where possible to ensure that patients healthcare needs can be met without unnecessary exposure.
• Patients experiencing symptoms such as coughing, fever, or shortness of breath or believe exposure to COVID-19 is likely should call to schedule an appointment to be tested for COVID-19.
• Patients with a previously scheduled appointment will be contacted via telephone to determine whether a face to face visit or telephone visit is preferred.

Dental Services

• All dental scheduled appointments will be cancelled. All calls regarding dental emergencies for established patients will be triaged by a dentist.
• Dental services at the Hub of Hope is closed until further notice. Any dental emergencies for established patients will be routed to the SKWC for phone triage.

Pathways to Housing

Project HOME at Pathways to Housing will remain open to Pathways to Housing PA clients.

Hub of Hope

Healthcare services at the Hub of Hope will continue to stay open until further notice.

Additional Services

• Group services at all locations are postponed until further notice. Staff will proactively contact all group participants regarding ongoing care management.
• Hospitality at SKWC will remain open, however, the time clients and patients can stay in the lobby will be limited. Clients will be given an appointment time and will be asked to return at that time for hospitality services. Additionally, snacks will not be provided.

The Honickman Learning Center and Comcast Technology Labs will be closed until further notice. All Adult Learning classes and workshops are canceled. Our open computer labs will also be closed and facility spaces will not be available to rent.

In light of the orders from the city and state to close all non-essential business, our HOME Spun Boutique will be closed until further notice. Unfortunately, we will also be unable to fulfill new orders to both our online store and bookstore.

We are also no longer able to accept in-kind donations at our HOME Spun Boutique or the Hub of Hope; these may be delivered to 1515 Fairmount Avenue.

As our frontline staffers continue to provide important services to folks experiencing homelessness, we are fielding their requests for essential items. A monetary donation will help us acquire these items more quickly, allowing us to more efficiently get them in the hands of those who need them most.

All K-12 After School programs at the Honickman Learning Center and Comcast Technology Labs will be canceled in light of District of Philadelphia schools being closed. The city has released a list of locations where safe spaces and meal service will be provided, which can be found here.

As we have come to expect, the Philadelphia community is reaching out during this time of crisis to determine how to help the most vulnerable among us.  We live in a wonderful city!

As we respond to the needs of people living on our streets and those who are particularly susceptible to the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic, we will continue to provide updates here on our blog and through our social media channels.

In-Kind Donations

Our frontline staff attending to the needs of both residents and individuals experiencing homelessness are requesting the following items:

Priority Items

• Bottled water
• Hand sanitizer containing at least 60 percent alcohol (travel size or larger)
• New blankets
• Surgical masks
• Clorox wipes and disinfectant spray
• Body wipes

Additional Needs

• Soap
• Lotion
• Shampoo
• Deodorant
• Travel-size tissues
• Travel-size band-aids
• Non-perishable food 
• New socks
• New underwear
• T-shirts
• New washcloths
• Snack bars

Drop donations off between 9 AM and 5 PM Monday through Saturday at one of two locations:

• 1515 Fairmount Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19130
• Hub of Hope, 1401 Arch Street Lower Level, Suburban Station Concourse, Philadelphia, PA 19102
• Sacred Heart Recovery Residence, 1315 Hunting Park Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19140 (donation accepted at front door; please ring the bell and staff will provide assistance)

Volunteering

To protect the health of the entire Project HOME community—including our dedicated volunteers—we are not asking for new volunteers. And while our volunteer program will remain operational for existing volunteers, we ask them to stay home if they meet any of the following criteria:

• You are a resident of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania and, in accordance with Governor Wolf’s address on March 12th, asked to refrain from non-essential travel;  
• You, someone you live with, or someone you have had close contact with has traveled to China, South Korea, Japan, Italy or Iran in the last 14 days;
• You have been asked to self-quarantine by any doctor, hospital or health agency;
• You, someone you live with, or someone you have had close contact with has been diagnosed with COVID-19; or,
• You currently have symptoms consistent with a potential COVID-19 diagnosis (fever, cough, or shortness of breath).

Community Events and Services

Project HOME has postponed or canceled the following events:

• Peg’s Place Groundbreaking originally scheduled for Wednesday, March 18
• Our Spring job fair originally scheduled for Thursday, March 26 at the Honickman Learning Center and Comcast Technology Labs (HLCCTL)

HLCCTL K-12 After School programs are all cancelled due to the Philadelphia Public School District closure. We will still offer Open Lab hours unless the City of Philadelphia closes.

Project HOME classes and other community services at the Stephen Klein Wellness Center will continue as scheduled.

The Hub of Hope in Suburban Station remains open and will operate on its normal schedule.
