Preparing Teens to Graduate High School and Achieve Success in Post-Secondary Education and Beyond

There’s power and potential in post-secondary education. Yet graduating high school, preparing for college, and ensuring a successful transition to post-secondary learning and then a career can be a challenge, especially for first-generation high school graduates and college students.

Project HOME’s Teen and College Access programs seek to efficiently prepare teens in previously underserved areas to achieve success through high school graduation, career and college readiness, college access, and successful college retention.

The program's goal is to prepare students for, and ensure they succeed in, post-secondary education and employment. Students participate in academic support courses and specialty programs, providing an out-of-school creative outlet while developing technology skills and academic learning. In addition to academic support, enrichment, SAT prep, and college access guidance, the programs offer electives in the areas of:

  • Culinary Arts
  • Film
  • Photography
  • Digital Music
  • Digital Media
  • Computer Technology
  • Robotics

These electives give students the opportunity to engage in hands-on activities, gain new skills, and find a creative outlet while also connecting them to alternative career and entrepreneurship opportunities.

Guaranteed Paid Summer Employment for Teen and College Access Program Students

Over the summer, Project HOME provides our high school and college students with paid summer internships and professional development over a six-week period. Through Project HOME’s Youth Employment program, students have  been placed at sites around the city, including Aramark, Chosen 300 Ministries, Share Food, Depaul, and Grocery Outlet. Placements internally at Project HOME have included Gloria Casarez  Residence, Ruth Williams House, our Human Resources Department,  HOMEspun Boutique, Stephen Klein Wellness Center, and Helen Brown Community Center.

Over 60 teens earn income and gain valuable work experience each summer. Each Friday, all students return to the Honickman Learning Center Comcast Technology Labs for professional development seminars, such as workplace etiquette, formal email writing, creating a professional social media presence, writing a resume, early banking skills, and work/life balance.
