Winter Volunteer Opportunities
Hub of Hope Volunteer Greeter
Join our winter initiative, and help those who are still experiencing street homelessness! Located in Suburban Station, the Hub of Hope is a seasonal walk-in engagement center for individuals experiencing homelessness, providing a range of social services and housing placement to visitors.
Date and Time: Monday through Friday, from January 5 to April 3 | Morning shift, 6 am to 10 am, evening shift, 6 pm to 8 pm
Location: Suburban Station, under Two Penn Center
Tasks:Â Greeters welcome Hub participants, help maintain the space, promote active goal and decision-making among participants, and support Hub staff.
How to get started: We are hosting Hub of Hope orientations for both old and new volunteers. Times, locations and orientation registration are here. (Volunteers only need to attend one of the two orientations.) New volunteers can fill out the volunteer application on our website, note “Hub of Hope” in the “Assignment Preference” field, and then sign up for an orientation.
K-8 Homework Tutor
Help tutor young students in our after-school programs.
Location: Honickman Learning Center Comcast Technology Labs, 1936 N. Judson Street, Philadelphia, PA 19121
Tasks: Tutors are asked to help students with their homework, provide educational activities when homework is finished, and communicate closely with program staff to discuss any issues with students.
Qualifications:
- Minimum Age 18
- Child Abuse Clearance
- Criminal Background Check
- Commitment of 4 months (1 semester) required
How to get started: New volunteers can fill out the volunteer application, note “K-8 Tutor” in the “Assignment Preference” field, and then sign up for the orientation. Both old and new volunteers can sign up for the K-8 orientation at this link.
Philadelphia Point in Time (“PIT”) Count 2015
The PIT is part of a federal effort to measure the nation's homeless population.Teams of volunteers, experienced outreach workers and service providers will canvass the city in search of people living on the streets. The count will capture important demographic information that will help focus the work of outreach and service providers.Â
Date and time: January 21, 2015. 10:30 pm to 3:30 am. Weather dates: January 22 and January 28
Location: Initial meeting point to be determined. Volunteers will be assigned sections of the city to canvass with teams
Tasks: Volunteers will be trained in how to respectfully and safely engage individuals living on the streets, and then will work in teams to canvass an assigned neighborhood to administer surveys and give out supply donations. Volunteers are also needed to compile and organize the donations before they are distributed.
How to get started: Register for the event and a training session at this link. The PIT is a national project that does not require prior experience, the Project HOME volunteer orientation, or background checks. Questions may be directed to [email protected]
