The roots of the day celebrate a St. Valentine, a priest in Rome who preached compassion, love, and justice at the community. Centuries later, consumerism made it into a celebration of romantic love. That’s sweet, but St. Valentine understood the connection between love and justice. (In the words of Cornel West: “Justice is what love looks like in public.”)
