The HOME Spun Resale Boutique, an employment initiative of Project HOME, is in need of men’s clothing! We are looking for high-quality casual to professional outfits and accessories. They can be dropped off anytime during our open hours: Tuesday-Friday 11 AM-7 PM and Saturday 12-5 PM at 1523 Fairmount Avenue (tax receipts available). David Brown, HOME Spun Boutique Sales Associate, was hired in November, 2012, shortly before Project HOME’s thrift store enjoyed a noticeable renovation to become the HOME Spun Boutique in July 2013. Before moving to Project HOME’s Ray Homes, David was chronically homeless for twenty-five years, living on the Ben Franklin Parkway. After building a relationship with Outreach worker Sam Santiago, David transitioned to housing at Ray Homes, joined adult education basic literacy tutoring at Honickman Learning Center-Comcast Technology Labs, and enrolled in Employment Services for job coaching. With support from his employment specialist, David applied for work that would allow him to make use of his gregarious nature and energetic desire to give back to others.
When David was hired at HOME Spun Boutique, he began chipping away to learn the responsibilities of his new position. Using a supportive employment approach that capitalizes on his positive and outgoing nature, David works closely with the boutique manager to modify tasks so he can complete register transactions, sales settlements, and inventory check lists, despite low literacy and numeracy. David brings a warm and welcoming presence for customers and others donating clothes to the boutique. A highlight this year was the boutique fashion show, where David and other residents and staff modeled designer clothes on Fairmount Avenue for a crowd of supporters. Later, at HOME Spun Boutique’s one-year birthday party, David shared that his job brings him pride and a path to share his skills with Project HOME and the public.
