Philly COUNTS 2014

Will O'Brien

Introducing: Philly COUNTS 2014!

Every January, Project HOME coordinates Philadelphia’s Point-in-Time Count of the unsheltered homeless population – now called PhillyCOUNTS.  The count provides valuable information on the location and needs of street homeless Philadelphians, and is used to measure the City’s progress toward ending veteran homelessness.

The next count is coming up on January 22, 2014, and Project HOME needs your help to do it. PhillyCOUNTS is part of the national effort to eliminate street homelessness spearheaded by the federal Departments of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and Veterans Affairs (VA).  These counts are used to evaluate our strategies to overcome street homelessness and assists in the development of new housing resources.  By knowing who is on the street, where they are, and what they need, Project HOME and its partner agencies can most effectively target services to those that need them the most.

To conduct PhillyCOUNTS, teams of volunteers canvass the City’s streets, parks, and subways, and administer a short housing survey to everyone they encounter.

This year’s count takes place on the night of Wednesday, January 22, 2014 from midnight to 3am, and we need more than 300 volunteers. Tell your friends and family about it (must be at least 18 years old)! Volunteer to put up posters in your neighborhood and apartment buildings. For any questions or to get posters, email us at [email protected].

Wishing you warmth this holiday season,
