On a single night in January 2016, there were 549,928 people nationwide experiencing homelessness and 32 percent of them were without shelter, according to projecthome.org. Project HOME is an organization working to empower adults, children, and families to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty.

The National Alliance to End Homelessness states that low income homes and a lack of affordable housing increases the risk of a person experiencing homelessness. Renter households paying more than 50 percent of their income toward housing totaled 6,902,060 in 2016, according to the agency.
