[NEWS] Philadelphia program offers hub for homeless in blizzard
From USA Today:Â
In just 850 square feet of space in a Philadelphia subway station underneath City Hall, there's a haven that not only offers shelter, but also services to help end homelessness.
During the city's sometimes-rough winter season, the homeless routinely go underground to the subway stations to escape the elements.
"This is a place where we try to lower barriers to care for the homeless," said Karen Orrick, coordinator of Hub of Hope, a drop-in center that helps the city's homeless from early January through early April. The site, open Monday through Friday, gives off a comfortable and homey feel with its colorful curtains and wall decorations.
In addition to getting something hot to drink, clients can sit down with social workers, doctors, nurses or mental health professionals during a visit to the center, she said.
