New Beginnings

Our veterans employment program graduates its fifth class of ten hardworking interns.

The fifth annual graduation ceremony for the PECO/Exelon Veterans Training and Employment Program - held on April 21 at the Sheraton Philadelphia Hotel Roof-Top Room - brought out current graduates and program alumni, all of them ready to celebrate both their substantial achievements and the transformative program that provided their fresh start.

Romona Riscoe Benson, PECO manager of corporate relations, opened the program by welcoming the attendees. She introduced Sr. Mary Scullion, who spoke movingly of the depth and breadth of those in need in our city, of her pride in our graduates and her gratitude to business leaders who have assisted Project HOME’s programs to alleviate joblessness.

These businesses include: Sheraton Philadelphia Downtown and Sheraton Society Hill Hotels, Allied Barton, Ameri-Health, The Franklin Institute, Fresh Grocer, Shop Rite and SEPTA. Many representatives of these businesses attended the graduation. Sr. Mary also expressed her hope that in the aftermath of Pope Francis’s mission to Philadelphia this year, more business decision-makers will be inspired to join those who are working to solve the problem of joblessness.

Dignity Restored, recounting Thomas Walker’s difficult path through homelessness and substance abuse, was screened as part of the day. His life feels fulfilled as a result of the internship, which has led to employment at Manna. He attributed this to God’s good graces and spoke of his pride at being able “to give something back to those who continue to be in need.”

Rick Staub, general manager of Sheraton Philadelphia Downtown Hotel, spoke of his education (through Sr. Mary’s tutelage) on the problems of the underserved as a preamble to his introduction of Ronald Mimms, class speaker. Ronald spoke eloquently of his path through substance abuse to his current job at Sheraton Hotel, Society Hill. He thanked Deanne, the HR manager “who took a chance on him because he had no hotel experience” and Juan, the housekeeping manager, who “provided him great tutelage.”

The program was enhanced by the performance of Warren Oree and the Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble. A great feeling of camaraderie pervaded the atmosphere, fueled by the graduate’s joy of accomplishment and their many reasons to hope and dream toward their futures.
