Crazy Church

John Bowie

A resident intern in our Advocacy department reflects on the meaning Sunday worship has for him.

Crazy Church

That powerful, Spirit-driven kind of worship, common in the African American religious tradition.

A time of authentic freedom of religious and spiritual expression.

A time when the people of GOD, are visited by the Spirit of GOD in a personal kind of way.

A time when Church Mothers, for a few moments, no longer need their canes and walkers!

When Church Elders quietly do a Holy chacha that is unique to each man.

A time when our little one’s watch and mimic what they see!

A time when some quietly pat their foot, while others resist a supernatural desire to dance.

A time when everybody in the house, like it or not, knows that something special is happening.

Crazy church, that time when one is compelled to “dance like David danced.”

A time when worship becomes personal, spontaneous.

A time when the faithful cannot deny that”fire shut up in the bones,” a fire that can’t be explained or extinguished by mere intellect or willpower.

Crazy Church, when and where God receives the praises of God’s people, and in return, the people of God enjoy God’s presence in an indescribable fashion.

Crazy Church, when that part of God within each of us, responds to the greater presence of God beyond us.

Crazy Church, words chosen to try to describe the indescribable.

Crazy Church, when and where for a single moment, God demands, and receives, the praises of God’s people! And inhabits that praise!

For if we don’t praise God, the very rocks would cry out!

Now that would be crazy!

John Bowie, writer and poet as well as a member of Saint Elizabeth’s residence and intern with our advocacy department, wrote this poetic meditation on his church, Rose of Sharon, also located in the St. Elizabeth’s neighborhood. The neighborhood is home to our new Stephen Klein Wellness Center as well as the Honickman Learning Center and Comcast Technology Labs.
