Changing the World

Will O'Brien

On Wednesday, March 19 the Wilt Chamberlain Auditorium was the site of the official opening of the Mary Ellen Mark Portrait Gallery. The Honickman Learning Center Comcast Technology Labs is celebrating its 10th Anniversary. As part of this celebration, the world renowned photographer Mary Ellen Mark and her partner Martin Bell, a world class film maker, spent two weeks in April on site at the Learning Center. Portraits were taken of over 60 students and alumni. These beautiful portraits represent our past, our present, and our future.

A film entitled “We Can Change the World” was also created by Martin Bell during that spring visit. The film shows the vibrancy and hope that is present in our neighborhood.

Last Wednesday, over 120 community members, students, families, and staff enjoyed the grand opening of our Portrait Gallery as well as the premier of the outstanding film. It was a wonderful night. Sister Mary and Lynne Honickman were on hand to greet and thank Mary Ellen and Martin who came from New York to join us for this special event. The energy in the room on Wednesday affirmed for all of us that we can indeed “change the world.”

We are grateful for the artists, our benefactors and the many staff and community members who came together to make the night a grand success.
