Celebrating Young Talent

Teresa McKnight, K-8 Program Manager

We had another wonderful and successful year in Project HOME's K-8 Program, and we are so proud of our young people.

The K-8 After-School Program at the Honickman Learning Center/Comcast Technology Labs emphasizes academic skill development in the areas of literacy, math, and technology, as well as providing fun, stimulating enrichment activities such as hip hop dance, clay-making with The Clay Studio’s Claymobile, and sewing.

This year the K-8 students who tremendous improvement in their academic growth!  87% of our students showed improvement in literacy and technology, with 35% showing one year or more of growth in literacy.  86% showed improvement in math, with 52% showing one year or more of growth!

The program also implemented a fun incentive program where students earned “Honickman Bucks” for attendance, completing math and reading lessons, and demonstrating good behavior.  Every Friday students spent their bucks at the Open Market where they bought toys, candy, and food.  For our last Open Market students were able to buy entry into an Ice Cream social, complete with a movie and their choice of ice cream toppings.

The K-8 Program also had an end of the year Talent Show. Students showcased their acting skills and their dance talent. Students even choreographed their own dance routines. We also hosted an end of the year Awards Ceremony.  Students received various awards for their academic achievements – such as Best and Most Improved in Reading and Math.  They also received awards for Best Attendance, Most Respectful, and Most Helpful.  The students, parents, and staff had a blast celebrating the kids’ various talents and accomplishments!
