An Act of Love

Will O'Brien

"Elie Wiesel was a profound voice of spiritual and moral urgency in our world."

On the floor in the lobby of Project HOME's JBJ Soul Homes residence is a beautiful mural suggestive of water, surrounded by a quote from Elie Wiesel:  “An act of love may tip the balance.”  This quote was recommended by John and Leigh Middleton, dear friends and partners, who  were major partners in the development of JBJ Soul Homes.

The author of that quote, Elie Wiesel, passed away at the age of 87.  Weisel was a survivor of Nazi concentration camps as a boy.  His memoir Night, published in English in 1960, was one of the first and wrenchingly powerful personal accounts of life in the camps.  Many of us remember first reading that short book, and it seared our consciousness, forcing us to confront the darkness of what humans are capable of.  For the next sixty years, Wiesel wrote and spoke about the crucial task of not forgetting and of living with peace and compassion in this violent and unjust world.  He sought to bring new relevance from the ancient Jewish tradition to contemporary life, while at the same time speaking to all people. He was a profound voice of spiritual and moral urgency in our world.

Via the mural at JBJ Soul Homes, Elie Wiesel has encouraged us at Project HOME to continue to act in love to redeem our world.  So we will continue to do so.

More quotes by Elie Wiesel:

"We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented."

"The opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference."

"There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest."
