Accolades and Ovations

Will O'Brien

On February 6, 2014 Project HOME’s Adult Learning and Workforce Development (ALWD) hosted its 2013 GED Graduation in the Honickman Learning Center and Comcast Technology Labs’ Wilt Chamberlain Auditorium. It was an evening inspired by the personal achievements and milestones of graduates shared by family, friends, and mentors. It was a night filled with well-deserved accolades and ovations on the journey that carves the path to a brighter future.

Dressed in gowns and sashes of distinction, alumnus, Erica Brown (resident), Holly McBride (resident) and Melissa Mellow (community member), ushered the new class of graduates with pride. Erica’s wonderful “look ahead” speech shined of optimism and promise. Melissa’s perspective on the journey from GED to a college degree speech resonated with the graduates and their families.

A special thanks goes out to the speakers of the evening.  Graduate Derrick Burley plans to attend Community College of Philadelphia (CCP) in the fall.  In the meantime, he continues to write and had a recent contribution to One Step Away.  ALWD graduate alumni, Melisa Mello is currently pursuing her psychology degree at CCP. Her soulmate (Tabron Williams) was one of the GED graduates of the night. Project HOME resident Lorene Greene was on hand to collect her GED completion certificate and finally throw her graduation cap in the air with the rest of her classmates.  A very exciting time for everyone!

The next information session for the ALWD’s adult basic education, tutoring, and GED Classes will be held March 25, 2014. To get details, contact Erich Smith, program manager, at 215-235-2900, x6117 or [email protected].
