2018 Project HOME Summer Service Learning Experience for High School Students

Project HOME offers rising 10th to 12th grade students a summer service opportunity focused on learning about issues of poverty and homelessness, building relationships with others involved in social change, getting to know persons who have experienced poverty and homelessness, and engaging in service with Project HOME and other agencies fighting poverty, hunger and homelessness in Philadelphia.  This experience is designed to deepen students’ desire to be of service, understanding of Project HOME’s mission, insight on the issues of poverty and homelessness and the systems that impact these issues, experience of diversity, and connections with other teens interested in serving their community.

Program fee of $100 is required to participate in the program.  Scholarships are available.  Please request scholarship assistance on the application. Please register by June 15, 2018.

Students must be available for the whole session for which they apply. As part of participating in the program, students will be asked to commit to hosting a homelessness awareness session in their school community and/or hosting a collection drive in their school community. Please complete this form to participate. Space is limited. 

Dates:

Session 1: July 9-19 (M-Th)
Session 2: July 23 to August 2 (M-Th)
Session 3: August 6-16 (M-Th)
Session 4: August 20-24 (one week M-F)

Time:

9  a.m. - 3 p.m. (subject to some variance)

Service may be done in partnership with any or all of the following agencies: 

  • Project HOME
  • Mercy Neighborhood Ministries
  • Share Food Program
  • MANNA
  • Sanctuary Farm Phila
  • Eastern State Penitentiary

Some things that students should remember for the week are:

  • Dress comfortably and modestly (no short shorts or sleeveless shirts)
  • Shoes—students should wear sneakers each day for public health reasons and safety
  • Bring their lunch each day
  • Cell phones should only be used in an emergency
