2014 Homeless Memorial Day
As we approach the first official day of winter, hundreds of Philadelphians will gather to remember those homeless and formerly homeless Philadelphians who died in 2014 and to call for an end to homelessness.
As we gather this year, we recognize that many factors contribute to homelessness: lack of affordable housing; inadequate education and economic opportunity; and lack of access to quality health care. But we also recognize that individuals and families experiencing homelessness also face discrimination. They are often victims of dehumanizing attitudes, laws criminalizing homelessness, and even acts of violence. An important step in addressing homelessness is to assert the fundamental dignity of all persons – single adults, families, and youth – who are in situations of homelessness and poverty, and to work tirelessly to protect their basic human and civil rights. Only then can we truly nurture a spirit of community and compassion. Only then will we develop truly effective public policies that move us toward justice.
We use this occasion to call on all Philadelphians and all Americans to recommit ourselves to ending homelessness. Join us at Dilworth Park, on the west side of City Hall, at 5 pm on Thursday, December 18.
